Kangaroo at Sunset 1/5 Ounce Silver Proof Coin Released

2011-Kangaroo-at-Sunset-1-5-Oz-Silver-Proof-Coin

The Royal Australian Mint has released the 2011 Kangaroo at Sunset 1/5 Ounce Silver Proof Coin. Each Kangaroo at Sunset Coin is struck from 1/5 ounce of 99.9% pure silver and is available directly from the Mint for AUD $65.00, or AUD $59.09 for international orders.

Shown on the reverse of the strike is the Wojciech Pietranik design made famous a few years ago when it first appeared on gold coins issued by the Mint. This design showcases a kangaroo on the outback at dusk. A waning sun behind the marsupial casts a reflective shadow in front of the creature. The only inscription on the reverse indicates the coin’s fineness with "999 Ag."

A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of the strike, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions of "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," "2011" and "1 DOLLAR."

This series of 1/5 ounce coins marks its second year with this release. They first debuted in 2010 expanding on the Mint’s Kangaroo at Sunset program and proved extremely popular with collectors who quickly purchased the entire mintage of 5,000 leading to a sell-out.

Each Kangaroo at Sunset 1/5 Ounce Silver Proof Coin has a diameter of 21.69 mm and a gross weight of 6.03 grams. The strikes are sold along with a presentation case inside an illustrated shipper.
