Kangaroo At Sunset Silver Coins

The Royal Australian Mint discovered one of its most popular silver coin series when it started releasing the Kangaroo At Sunset Silver Coins. These silver proof coins actually continued the success the Mint had already achieved with its Kangaroo at Sunset Gold Coins by utilizing the same design, only in a more affordable precious metal option.

That design quickly caught the eye of collectors who appreciated the simplistic yet elegant style. As the name of the silver proof coin series indicates, a kangaroo at sunset is depicted on the reverse of the strike.

The design was the original work of artist Wojciech Pietranik, a world renowned sculptor. He created the image with a kangaroo shown about to hop against the backdrop of the outback at dusk. With the waning sun behind it, an elongated shadow of the marsupial is thrown towards the bottom of the image. Adding to the elegance of the design, the shadow is reflective in nature which stands out spectacularly from the more frosted field.

One ounce silver coins containing the world renowned design started appearing in 2009. However, their mintage was extremely limited as they were released as part of the Fabulous Twelve Silver Collection which also included silver examples of other world coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and the American Eagle. Since that silver debut, specimen quality Kangaroo at Sunset Coins have also been issued adding to the Royal Australian Mint’s line-up.

Finally, in 2010, the Mint opted to expand the series once again. This time it started to strike the coin in a much smaller proof quality one-fifth ounce version. Like its larger counterpart, the smaller strike contained a reverse including the popular kangaroo design as well as featured a face value of $1 like the one ounce strike.

Both silver coin sizes contain a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of England on their obverses. The inclusion of the constitutional monarch of Australia is required on legal tender coins of the country.

Thus, collectors looking to purchase a Kangaroo At Sunset Silver Coin will need to pay particular attention to specifications of the strike in question. This will ensure they know whether they are looking at the larger or the smaller version of the coin.
